I am finally free from the clutches of the state of Virginia. I paid in full a huge traffic fine I had just today. Some of you may think "Who gives a flying ****?" I've had a mountain of trouble with getting my driver's license back with the fines, but more importantly, having lost my birth certificate. Anyone who has done any business with the DMV knows that they won't do anything for you as far as a license or a state ID without identifying documents, one of which must be a birth certificate. When I moved to East Stone, I lost mine. After many round and rounds with the DMV, one of the more knowledgeable agents up at the Norton office asked me if I'd ever served in the military. He said if I had, they could take a DD-214 form in place of a birth certificate. After some help from Rick Boucher's office, I had mine in hand and was finally able to get a VA state ID. Now, after all this time, I'm at the last leg of finally getting my life totally on track.

You can get a certified copy of your birth certificate from the state of Va.. I can't remember for sure, but I think it is the Bureau of Vital Statistics. I had the same problem of losing my original. It was good enough to secure a passport. It was only like a $10 fee I think..maybe something to look into to have a birth certificate for the future.

Oh, if it were that simple. I had 2 problems with that: I was adopted, and born out of state (California). Being a resident of Virginia then, I thought the state of VA would have my certificate on file. They did not, said I would have to contact vital records in California. So I did, they advised me to fill out a downloadable form, have it notarized, and send it in. Well, 3 months went by and no response. Called their office again and they said they'd never received it. They said I may get a quicker response from the county where I was born, said to fill out another form and send it to the county dept. of vital records where I was born. One of the problems was with staffing cuts due to state funding cutbacks, the state dept. of vital records closed their walk-in office and transactions could only be handled over the phone...which was only open for 3 hours a day. Imagine the bottleneck of calls coming into that line now.
